Pro Altimeter utilizes the high-fidelity barometric pressure sensor found in iOS devices to accurately calculate altitude.
Featuring a straightforward interface, Pro Altimeter showcases barometric and GPS altitudes in easy-to-read large numbers with real-time accuracy estimates. Users can switch between feet and meters as units, with calibration and display mode options conveniently placed at the bottom. The display offers a daytime mode with black digits on an LCD-green background and a night mode designed for low-light conditions.
Calibration is essential for precise altitude measurements through barometric pressure, akin to how a pilot sets the altimeter in the cockpit before takeoff. Pro Altimeter provides four calibration methods for user convenience:
- Utilize GPS altitude to correlate local barometric pressure with GPS-measured altitude.
- Manually input known altitude from landmarks, maps, or surveys.
- Manual input of pressure from weather reports to relate barometric pressure to altitude.
- Select from the five nearest airports within a 100-mile radius to import METAR data for calibration purposes.
Following calibration, Pro Altimeter monitors the time since the last calibration to ensure accuracy amidst changing weather conditions. The app alerts users after 6 hours have passed since the last calibration, flashing a "CALIBRATE" button as a reminder. It is recommended to calibrate regularly, especially during outdoor activities or whenever notable weather changes occur.
Designed for iOS devices equipped with a built-in barometric pressure sensor (iPhone 6 and newer, iPad Air 2 and newer, iPad mini 4 and newer, and iPad Pro), Pro Altimeter exclusively displays GPS altitude on older devices lacking this sensor.
For Apple Watch owners, the new Pro Altimeter for Watch extends the same functionality to your wrist for added convenience.
